Addressing the Causes and Effects of Common Injuries
Although assisted living facility residents are typically not bedridden and are more independent in many ways than nursing home residents, they are vulnerable to some of the same types of injuries and conditions that commonly affect people in nursing homes, including the following:
- Falls and fractures
- Sexual abuse
- Malnutrition and dehydration
- Improper medication
In addition, a resident may not want to report a cut, bloody nose, bruise or difficulty with motor skills to anyone, but it may end up leading to serious medical difficulties later on if left untreated due to a lack of attention from facility staff.
Holding Facilities Responsible for Their Services
Assisted living facilities do not have the same legal responsibilities as nursing homes, but they are responsible for the services they have agreed to provide. For instance, if the facility has agreed to deliver medication, they need to deliver the right dose of the right medication.
Also, if employees are visiting a resident on a regular basis in order to carry out the facility's duties and they see that someone is injured or suffering, they may be legally responsible for providing care or reporting the problem to the appropriate person.
